David A. Myers

David A. Myers holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education and a Master’s Degree in Middle Level Education with emphasis in Music from the University of Vermont.  He is an active expert in Middle Level Curriculum Development, Interdisciplinary Teaching, Teacher Advisories and has developed an instrumental music portfolio assessment process.  He has co-authored articles for professional journals and presented several workshops on these topics.  Most recently Mr. Myers was nominated by the State of Vermont to represent the state at the ETS (Educational Testing Service) Multi-State Study Committee to help determine the scoring matrix for the new Praxis music teacher licensing exam.  He was named to the Vermont State Peer Teaching Licensing Board in November, 2011.

Mr. Myers has been a composer of band music since the early 1980s with nearly 250 compositions, arrangements and transcriptions to his credit.  He has published over 50 selections for band and small ensembles to include several commission pieces.  His works are published by Boosey & Hawkes, Inc., Bourne Co., Cimarron Music Press, FJH Music Co., Stonebridge Music, Les Taylor Publications, and Grand Mesa Music Publishers.  Mr. Myers skills as a composer are based in great part on his extensive experience as a band director in Vermont schools.  Many of his pieces are listed on State Music Lists throughout the country as recommended literature for young bands.   He studied composition with Julius Williams, and received instruction from renowned band composers, Clare Grundman, Dr. Quincy Hilliard and Jerry Nowak. 

 

Mr. Myers is active throughout New York and New England as a guest conductor, composer, clinician, adjudicator and performer.  He has taught in Vermont schools for over 33 years.  His bands have received numerous accolades including invitations to perform at Walt Disney World Resort in 2004, 2007 and 2010, several performances at the Vermont State House, and the Vermont Music Educator’s Convention.   Most recently his groups have earned Superior ratings at band competitions and festivals.  He has received several honors for his work with Vermont students including annual listings in Who’s Who in American Education and Music Education, and the prestigious Governor’s Commendation for Excellence in the Arts and Community Service.

Mr. Myers has been a member of the 40th Army Band for over 32 years.  He has held the positions of Percussion Section Leader, Stage Band Director, and Staff Composer/Arranger.  Mr. Myers received his appointment to Warrant Officer at the Warrant Officer Candidate School, Fort Rucker, Alabama during the summer of 1995 and assumed the duties of Bandmaster/Commander of the 40th Army Band in December 1996.  Since then he is a graduate of the Warrant Officer Advanced Course and most recently the Warrant Officer Staff Course where he graduated at the top of his class with a 97.5% average.  He has received two awards of the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal and four presentations of the Army Achievement Medal.
